Grevy Danger by Victoria Tait [Book Review]

*This book has been kindly gifted to me by Voracious Reader Only in exchange for an honest review*

~ Trigger Warnings: death, murder, animal poaching ~

Grevy Danger by Victoria Tait is a cosy murder-mystery short story set in Kenya. Following the protagonist Mama Rose on an exploratory survey of an area in order to count the number of Grevy Zebra’s there are. The book picks up when a sudden death occurs, unsettling Rose. Another death soon gets Rose questioning the honesty of people in the village.

This book was actually far more refreshing than I expected as it was a quick, fun read that I think I needed. Following likable, honest characters with a wealth of traits portrayed in only a short time, it was easy to like characters but not necessarily need to feel deeply connected to them.

I loved the personal attachment the author had to the setting, because of her experience living in Kenya for 8 years of her life. Her ability to present the setting as something important to her, but also her care in not removing its history and narrative from its locale is impressively done in the span of just a few pages.

The only fault I have with this book is because it’s extremely short length, there’s no time for the reader to become very attached to the murdered characters, and it becomes a story purely for its plot, and not characters, but it is still a brilliant read, nonetheless.
